About Stories in Place

Stories in Place LLC is a professional, DBE-certified historical consulting firm dedicated to the documentation, interpretation, and presentation of history in a variety of formats. We specialize in place-based history projects, meticulous historical research, oral history, the development and curation of history-based exhibits and displays, and coordination of digital history projects. We independently direct projects, assembling teams as needed, and can also work in collaboration as a member of your team.

Our project portfolio includes permanent outdoor installations; museum exhibits; historical websites, online features, and smart phone apps; community oral history projects and training workshops; commemorative event research and planning; architectural history; genealogical research; and more. Based in Reno, Nevada, we work throughout the community, state, and region to connect the past and present, bringing history to life.

About Alicia Barber, PhD

Founder and owner Alicia Barber, PhD is a professional historian and award-winning writer whose work focuses on the built environment, cultural history, and place identity of Nevada and the American West.  With more than 20 years of experience working as a researcher, educator, published author, and public historian, she collaborates frequently with government agencies, museums, libraries, architects, and community groups to create dynamic public history projects about people and places. For a decade, she taught History and Core Humanities at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she directed the University of Nevada Oral History Program (UNOHP) from 2009-2013.  In 2017, she won the Individual Excellence in Consulting award from the National Council on Public History.

A former member of the Board of Directors of the Nevada State Board of Museums and History and three-term commissioner for the City of Reno’s Historical Resources Commission, Dr. Barber currently serves on the Boards of the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts and the Historic Reno Preservation Society. She is the author of Reno’s Big Gamble: Image and Reputation in the Biggest Little City as well as numerous chapters and articles for scholarly and popular publications, and in 2014 she was the recipient of the Silver Pen Award from the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame. She is the writer and producer of the historical feature Time & Place with Alicia Barber for KUNR Public Radio 88.7 FM. She holds a BA in English from Stanford University, an MA in English/American Studies from the University of Utah, and a PhD in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.
